The Affordable Care Act's premium tax credits are one of the most powerful tools for making health insurance affordable. Thanks to expanded subsidies, many enrollees now pay little to nothing for comprehensive coverage.
Subsidies are based on your household income relative to the federal poverty level. If your income falls between 100% and 400% of poverty (and in many cases beyond, under current enhanced rules), you may qualify for a credit that caps your premium at a set percentage of income.
The credit is applied directly to your monthly bill, so you see the savings immediately rather than waiting for tax season. You can also take it as a lump sum at tax time, but most people prefer the upfront reduction.
To claim the subsidy, you must enroll through the ACA Marketplace, file taxes, and have lawful presence. An independent licensed insurance broker can run the numbers for you and show exactly how much you'd pay after subsidies — at no cost to you.
